Sermon at Brirarwood PC, 25 January 2015.
When I left the church today at 5 p.m. I realized that in the last 24 hours there has been choir practice, wedding meeting, bulletin prepped and printed, a sermon finished, 10,000 other things by Nancy, a children and youth director transition meeting, a large number of emails, four + telephone calls, a worship band practice, a grade 4er stopping by too see our CYD, a NOVA event with lunch, Lent worship prep, Siloe Community coordination; and in the next 38 hours there will High School Youth Group, clean up, Burns supper set up, people preparing potatoes and music, Burns Supper, dancing, the 10 a.m. service, a joint coffee hour, the 11:30 a.m. service Sunday morning. What a blessed place Briarwood is just now!
A famous theologian, Marcus Borg, associated with the historical Jesus movement, died this morning. Here is the phrase alleged as his favourite to end lectures:
Life is short
we do not have much time to gladden the hearts of those who travel the way with us
so be quick to love
make haste to be kind
A planning body in the PCC is looking for input into imagining God’s future for the PCC. Be part of it!
Sermon at Briarwood PC, 11 January 2015. Genesis 5: 18-29.
Looks like I have been appointed Interim Moderator for La Communauté Siloé. This is a Cameroonian Canadian community of 80-100 people in attendance that meets at the Presbyterian College, Montreal. The Presbytery of Montreal has recently given permission for them to explore becoming a full-fledged congregation. I look forward to working with this group of committed and joyful Christians and their current pastor Eloi Agbanou! En français, et je vais essayer!
From the A&P website (can’t fine theirs):
“Siloé is the French translation of Shiloh, the portable shrine that Moses built in the wilderness, and was placed at Shiloh until the city was destroyed in 1104 BCE. The name is generally understood to mean “the peaceful one,” or “he who is to be sent.””
Loving going through all the programs, people, kids, details, plans, dates, and ministry approaches with Danielle Parris (our Children and Youth Direction) and Stevie Pemberton (our CYD while Danielle is on maternity leave for a year).
90 minutes and counting, and just at the tip of the iceberg for this amazing ministry.
